April 22, 2025 marks the 55th anniversary of Earth Day. Over 192 countries and one billion people around the globe are expected to participate demonstrating the power of Earth Day, which is to bring people from all walks of life to work together for a better future. The theme of this year’s Earth Day is ‘Our Power, Our Planet’, calling everyone to unitedly advocate for renewable energy so we can triple clean electricity by 2030. ‘Our Power – Our Planet’ is a powerful and timely call to action, emphasising the collective responsibility of individuals, organisations, and governments in transitioning to renewable energy and building a sustainable future.
The core focus of this year’s theme is Renewable Energy. The theme emphasizes the urgent need to shift away from fossil fuels towards clean and sustainable energy sources like solar, wind, hydro and geothermal and tidal power. The primary goal is to triple the global generation of clean electricity by 2030. The transition to renewables is essential for various reasons.
- Combating Climate change: Fossil fuels are the leading cause of greenhouse gas emissions, driving global warming and its consequences. Renewable energy offers a pathway to significantly reduce harmful emissions, which will help in reducing climate change.
- Reducing Air pollution: Burning fossil fuels release harmful pollutants that cause respiratory illnesses and other health problems, where clean energy resources improve the air quality.
- Enhancing Energy Security: Depending on fossil fuel resources can lead to geopolitical instability. Renewable energy sources are often more decentralised and locally available.
- Boosting Economic growth: the renewable energy sector is a rapidly growing industry, creating new jobs and opportunities for innovation and economic development.
- Improving public health: Cleaner energy leads to healthier populations by reducing pollution-related diseases.
Renewable energy sources, which are available in abundance all around us, provided by the sun, wind, water, waste, and heat from the Earth – are replenished by nature and emit little to no greenhouse gasses or pollutants into the air.
Switching to renewable energy sources is crucial for reducing greenhouse gas emissions because renewables generate electricity without producing carbon dioxide, the primary greenhouse gas. In contrast, fossil fuels are major emitters of greenhouse gases and thus are primary contributors to global warming.
The strength of this movement lies in its grassroots nature, and our power as individuals. It’s the collective voice of concerned citizens that pushes governments and corporations to make bold commitments and take decisive action. By engaging in community initiatives, participating in local and national elections with renewable energy in mind, and making sustainable choices in daily life, individuals are the catalysts for change. This people-powered revolution demonstrates that when we unite our voices and actions, we can overcome even the most recalcitrant systems and create a cleaner, more equitable energy future for all.
On Earth Day 2025, let us commit to harnessing renewable energy to build a healthy, sustainable, equitable and prosperous future for us all. Support and adopt the rapid transition to renewable energy sources now -- be it solar, wind, hydro-electric, tidal or geothermal.
From governments to global industry and local businesses, from unions, to schools, religious leaders, to civil society, families and individuals. Whether you are a town mayor, a trade union boss, a CEO, a banker, an artist, a farmer, fisherman, teacher, or firefighter – the true power of this revolution lies in the hands of individuals like you. People power is the driving force behind this transformation.
